Engagement Ring Trends by the Decade

A Blast from the Past: Engagement Ring Trends by the Decade | Cecil's Fine Jewelry

From trendy to timeless, engagement ring styles– like all styles– have evolved over time. And that isn’t stopping anytime soon! So sit back, relax and take a walk down memory lane as we spotlight each decade’s trends. You may be surprised at what you learn.

1950s

The 1950s spear-headed two, distinct engagement ring trends that still hold their own in today’s age. The first, is a diamond ring itself. Believe it or not, the idea of giving your special someone a sparkling stunner the size of your love was not common practice until diamond manufacturer, De Beers, began his, “Diamonds are forever,” marketing strategy in the late 40s.

Less showy but no less sparkling, American actor, Mel Ferrer, kicked off the trend of stackable rings when he proposed to Audrey Hepburn with an iconic trio. Since the star was notoriously style-conscious, he designed each ring to be a different metal so that she could match her ring with her outfit. Although Hepburn was reported to never, ever wear the rings stacked, modern trends implement this classic look with a twist.

1960s

By the 1960s, headline-making starlets were venturing away from Audrey Hepburn’s sleek and simple rings for a more wow-worthy wear, and brides-to-be were following suit. In fact, between Elizabeth Taylor’s 33-carat ring and Jackie Kennedy’s emerald and diamond duo, the 60s were a decade of “the bigger, the better.”

1970s

Although princess, radiant and emerald cuts were rumored to have been invented in the 60s, they were perfected by the 1970s, and the amount of fiancées dawning these dazzlers is proof. Square, geometric diamonds in yellow or rose gold became more popular than ever during this era, and brides began to coordinate their wedding bands to match.

1980s

Following in the footsteps of fashion’s bold colors and busy prints, elaborate diamond cuts such as pears, emeralds and cushions continued to gain popularity in the 80s. And while we’re on the topic of popular styles, we’d be remiss to leave out the most iconic ring of the decade (and maybe century)– Princess Diana’s. Not only did her sapphire engagement ring popularize the use of colored gemstones in rings again, but it also caused jewelers from around the world to create replicas.

1990s

Stepping away from the statement-making styles of the previous decade, left hands in the 1990s were adorned by less intricate, but more brilliant styles. White gold and platinum metals made a strong comeback, ushering in a resurgence of simple bands with solitaire, elaborate diamonds taking center stage.

2000s

In the new millennium, engagement rings took a turn for the traditional, and we have the internet to thank for it. From pavé bands and halo settings to three-stone rings with a show-stopping diamond, the 2000s mixed and matched styles from previous decades, by adding in unique takes on metals such as platinum, white gold and rose gold.

Recent Years

In the past few years, there has been a trend of juxtapositional engagement rings– large diamonds à la Kate Middleton (and previously Princess Di), with skinny bands to give the illusion that the diamond is even more grand.

From decade to decade and style to style, one thing always remains the same– Cecil’s Fine Jewelry is your jewelry team for life.

2019 Engagement Ring Trends

2019 Engagement Ring Trends | Cecil's Fine Jewelry

With each new year comes new resolutions, new habits, and our personal favorite– new trends. Whether you’re planning on popping the question, suspect that an engagement is on the way or simply like preparing for the future; Cecil’s Fine Jewelry has the rundown on the rings you’ll be seeing on every bride-to-be in 2019. And who knows? Maybe one of these beauties is already tucked away in a special box waiting for you!

Three Stone Rings

As soon as Meghan Markle unveiled her left hand’s newest addition at the end of 2017, we knew that three stone rings would spark jewelry trends worldwide for years to come. Featuring a large center diamond accented by two smaller stones on either side, we predict that 2019 will be a year of engagement rings inspired by royalty, but with a twist. Be on the lookout for uniquely shaped diamonds, like baguettes and trillions, perched delicately on top of thin, elegant bands.

Yellow Gold

While we’re on the topic of the Duchess of Sussex… Ms. Meghan Markle has brought back the trend of yellow gold sparklers, and if you ask us, the look is better than ever! After all, there’s a reason why so many 1980s brides dawn this look– the eye-catching metal looks gorgeous with any gemstone and nearly as many settings. And as an additional bonus, yellow gold is easily resized if necessary.

Colored Stones

Just like brides themselves, engagement rings can come in all different shapes, sizes and colors. While we’ve seen more out-of-the-box fiancée’s favoring the look of colored diamonds and gemstones for the last several years, there’s been an even larger uptick of 2019 brides incorporating color in new and interesting ways. From rubies to emeralds, any stone can be the star of your engagement ring!

Pear-Cut Rings

Created as a fashion-forward hybrid of marquise and oval diamonds, pear-shaped sparklers are a bold cut that we look forward to seeing everywhere in the new year. Perfect for those who want to stand out and make a statement, it’s no surprise that we’ve seen this popular pretty adorning the hands of celebrities from Victoria Beckham to Cardi B.

Fashion-Forward Settings

A round solitaire on a sleek band will always be timeless, but that’s not your only option! From criss-cross settings to a well-curated stack of sparklers, 2019 brides-to-be are adding their own, personal touch of drama to their most personal piece of jewelry; and we don’t see this trend going away anytime soon.

Halos

When it comes to rings, halos will always top the list of trends. And with their near magical ability to make any center diamond appear larger, why shouldn’t they? This year though, we predict couples making their halos more creative than ever. Through distinctive shapes, delicate details and offbeat ideas; halo looks will be on the hands of classic and bohemian brides alike.

Trends will come and go, but Cecil’s Fine Jewelry’s commitment to helping Arkansas brides find the most brilliant selections, never will. So visit us today! We hand-select each and every style carried in our store, and if you don’t see what you want– no problem! Our team of jewelers can help you create a custom piece of jewelry as unique as your love story.

The Dos and Don’t of a Holiday Proposal

The Dos and Don’t of a Holiday Proposal | Blog | Cecil's Fine Jewelry

Some call the time between Halloween and Valentine’s Day “the holidays,” but here at Cecil’s Fine Jewelry, we have our own name for it– engagement season. Be it the family get-togethers or the twinkle lights, serious couples everywhere have proposals on the brain. Before you drop on bended knee though, read through our dos and don’ts of things to keep in mind.

DO: Consider your future fiancée.

This is the moment she’s always waited for, so don’t forget to consider her personality when you plan the proposal. Some people might love hearing that long-awaited question while surrounded by family at Thanksgiving, while others may prefer a more private moment.

DON’T: Let TSA ruin your surprise.

Whether you’re headed home for the holidays or to a tropical destination, if you’re flying pre-proposal, now might be the time to apply for TSA pre-check. This will help you forgo more invasive screening, including emptying out the contents of your carry-on, that could spoil the surprise. And take it from us– no matter how secure your checked bag might be, don’t leave your future betrothed’s ring in there!

DO: Arrange for ring insurance.

Think about it. You spring for insurance on other large purchases like your home or car. Why not an engagement ring? Jewelry insurance is relatively inexpensive, and if it helps you travel with peace of mind, it’s worth every penny. Visit Beverly, Cecil’s Fine Jewelry’s Graduate Gemologist, for an appraisal, hard copy and alternate copy for your insurance company.

DO: Think about the entire day.

The day doesn’t end after she says, “I do.” You two will want some time to revel in the rush of your new engagement but will likely also want to celebrate with loved ones soon. Consider your holiday schedule and pop the question at a time that works within that. As a bonus, everyone has celebratory champagne on hand this time of year!

DON’T: Forget to ask for help.

You want to be careful about selecting those who will be “in the know,” but having a few co-conspirators never hurt. A best friend may know the most swoon-worthy proposal and nobody can hide a ring box under the tree quite like Mom or Dad.

DO: Go with the flow.

Between winter weather, holiday parties and more stressed schedules; the likelihood of your special moment going exactly as planned is slim. And that’s okay! Stay calm, roll with the punches and evaluate as needed. The holidays are a time to celebrate, so do so in the way that makes the most sense for you two!

DON’T: Settle for a ring that doesn’t fit.

Oops! You didn’t get her ring size exactly right. That’s fine for celebratory festivities, but make sure her ring is a reminder of your relationship– the perfect fit. Stop by Cecil’s for your in-house ring sizing.

DO: Visit us.

At Cecil’s, we hand-select each and every piece of jewelry that we have and do our best to help make every customers’ experience special. View some of our favorite stunners online, then visit us in store to find the ring your future bride is sure to love.

5 Times to Not Wear Your Engagement Ring

5 Times to Not Wear Your Engagement Ring | Cecil's Fine Jewelry Blog

Once you took one look at that dazzling diamond on your left-hand ring finger, you silently vowed to never take it off. And we don’t blame you! After all, if anyone understands what it’s like to love a piece of jewelry, it’s the staff at Cecil’s Fine Jewelry. But If you want to keep that beauty shining bright, there are times when you should safely tuck your engagement ring away.

At the Gym

Between the potential damage from your hard-earned sweat and the malleable nature of diamond jewelry, always be sure to think twice before keeping your special sparkler on during a workout. Pressure from weights against your hand could bend your band, distorting the look and increasing the possibility of your diamond popping right out of its setting. And when it comes to contact sports, take it from us– ring avulsion is as bad as it sounds.

While You’re Cleaning

Take a moment to think about the chemicals you use around your house. If they can eat through dirt, grime and buildup, they can easily eat through the finish and polish on your precious piece. On that note, we’ve all heard the horror stories of rings rolling into the garbage disposal or down a sink drain while a well-meaning wife does the dishes. R.I.P, ring!

During Your Skincare Routine

Moisturizers, lotions, sunscreens and body wash are all great for your skin, but when it comes to your engagement ring; they do more harm than good. Buildup from these products creep into the crevices of your ring, clouding your diamond with a layer of film. Instead, protect your most precious ring until your hands have completely dried, and beware of slipping when you go to put it back on.

When Swimming

Repeat after us– “I will never ever wear my engagement in water.” The cold water in pools, oceans, lakes and rivers causes your fingers to temporarily shrink, and that ring that was once the perfect fit, can easily find a new home at the bottom of a body of water. And if you’re wondering about hot tubs or heated pools, the answer is still a “no” from us. Although it would be easier to find if fallen, the chlorine and chemicals can cause damage and discoloration to your platinum, gold or white-gold band.

In the Kitchen

Last but not least, don’t wear your engagement ring while cooking dinner– or any meal for that matter. Not only can sticky residue lodge itself underneath your diamond, but germs and bacteria can too. And just like when swimming, you risk losing your ring to the sink drain when rinsing anything during meal prep.

While following these steps is the best way to keep your engagement ring in mint condition, we also understand that life happens. That’s why, here at Cecil’s Fine Jewelry, we do everything we can to help you with safekeeping the ring that holds your heart. From appraisals performed by our Graduate Gemologist, to ring sizing and jewelry repair; we have the special services needed to protect your most special accessory.

Tennis Bracelets: History and How To

Tennis Bracelets: History and How To | Cecil's Fine Jewelry

Timeless, gorgeous and as flexible as it is stylish; tennis bracelets have been glamorous gals’ go-to for decades. That doesn’t mean there aren’t questions associated with this classic though! What characteristics should you look for when purchasing one? How do you style it once it’s purchased, and how in the world did this small stunner get its name? We’re glad you asked.

The History

You may not consider your favorite diamond-encrusted piece of jewelry as sports wear, but tennis legend Chris Evert begged to differ. During a particularly long rally in the 1978 U.S. Open, Evert’s bezel-set “eternity bracelet” snapped off her wrist and went sailing across the court. Like any style setter would, she asked officials to stop the match until the lost bracelet was found, and the rest is history. “Tennis bracelets” became the  new moniker linked to lightweight diamond danglers everywhere, and jewelers began rapidly producing different cuts, carats, settings and metals to accommodate the new popularity.

The Fit

Part of a tennis bracelet’s allure is the loose, flirty fit associated with it. It should feel more loose than your typical bracelet, but there should never be risk of it rolling off your hand. The sweet spot is found when your arms are resting by your side. If the bracelet slips down to where your hand begins, and you can still slide a finger easily in the space between your arm and your arm’s newest addition, you’ve found your perfect fit.

The Essentials

Like many classics, tennis bracelets are designed to be able to wear anytime, anywhere; but in order to do that, you’ll want to be sure that your wow-worthy eye-catcher is worth the investment. First and foremost, make sure the bracelet’s secure. You don’t want to experience the same feeling Chris Evert did when her’s careened across the court. Look for a bracelet that boasts both a clasp and a safety latch, and double check that the setting is secured. Then, look at your potential piece’s movement. Go ahead and dance around with your hands in the air. Outside of the looks you received, did anything else seem odd? Did the links awkwardly catch, or did the movement seem fluid? It’s this flexibility that keeps your tennis bracelet from snapping, so don’t be stingy with testing!

The Style

Whether at the office, out on the town or at the U.S. Open; a tennis bracelet’s versatility has continued to prevail year after year. Whether worn alone to highlight your arms or stacked with a watch or other diamond bracelets; there aren’t many style rules for these sparklers. Simply pair it with other accessories with similar styles, and get your army party started.

The Find

Both simple and sleek yet bold and beautiful, tennis bracelets are notoriously popular gift picks. Where do you do that picking though? That’s important too! Here at Cecil’s Fine Jewelry, we make it easy for you. Our expertly trained staff will help you find the most beautiful bracelet for your budget, but we won’t stop there. From appraisal to sizing to an entirely custom design, Cecil’s is here to be your jeweler for life.

Pairing Perfection: Engagement and Wedding Rings

Pairing Perfection: Engagement and Wedding Rings | Cecil's Fine Jewelry

Your engagement ring has been the center of your hand’s attention since the day your S.O. popped the question– and rightfully so! But with your big day around the corner, you’re ready to upgrade that wow-worthy ring to become a dynamic duo, and your friendly staff at Cecil’s Fine Jewelry is here to help. From traditional solitaires to three-stone stunners, learn some pairing tips and tricks from the pros.

If you have a solitaire:

No matter the cut of your diamond, solitaire engagement rings are classy, simple and ultra-versatile. While this type of ring will look lovely alongside any band, brides-to-be can easily upgrade this set from “simple” to “statement-making” with the addition of some sparkle. A timeless, traditional look can be created with a diamond band, or you could introduce something less expected, such as a curved ring, that frames the center diamond.

If you have a halo or three-stone ring:

If the unusual shape of halo or three-stone rings are causing you to feel stuck, the answer may be closer than you expect. The secret is to opt for a wedding band that shares a similar element with your engagement ring. So, if your center diamond is a round cut, lean into that style and accent it even further with round diamonds on your band à la the Hearts on Fire’s Fulfillment Band. And as a failsafe, you can never go wrong with a pavé band.

If you have a gemstone engagement:

Brides who swoon over eye-catching colored stones should consider incorporating that same, fun flair into their wedding bands. If your center stone is sapphire, an alternating sapphire and diamond band is a good way to create a seamless combo, without competing for attention against your engagement ring.

If your ring is unusually shaped:

We’ve seen a surge in unusually-shaped engagement rings over the past decade, and we’ve found that often, the “less is more” adage rings (pun intended) true when it comes to pairing. Whether a simple, pavé pretty or a custom band that complements your engagement’s curves, you’ll make a statement with this outside-of-the-box beauty!

At the end of the day, shopping for the perfect pairing for your engagement is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so have fun, follow your heart, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Our jewelry team is expertly-trained and can’t wait to be your jeweler for life.

Mix and match with dainty delicates like our Hearts on Fire Aerial Eclipse Pendant and Color Merchants Triple Diamond necklace, or purchase your piece pre-layered like Marco Bicego’s Supreme Three Strand stunner.

Why You Should Buy Your Engagement Ring In Person

You Should Buy Your Engagement Ring In Person… Here’s Why

Between cuts, carats, and the proposal itself, there’s a lot to consider before getting down on one knee. The last thing you need on your mind when making one of life’s biggest decisions, is the fear of whether or not “NotFakeDiamondRings.com” is a reputable engagement ring source. When you’re ready to propose to the love of your life, remember that buying in-store has several advantages…

What You See is What You Get

Not all diamonds are created equal, and when you order online, what you see is not always what you get. Since there are so many different factors that go into a “good” diamond, there’s no substitute for seeing it in person, and comparing and contrasting its beauty. This way, you can see, touch and fall head-over-heels for the ring that’s supposed to signify your eternal love.

Comfort Counts

We don’t want to be pessimistic, but the internet is… the internet. Instead of filtering through the good and bad diamonds sold by both good and bad merchants, visit us. We love jewelry, and love to share that knowledge, experience and passion with our customers. Our expert jewelers can evaluate your style and budget, and guide you in the direction of your perfect “I do” piece, that you may not have ever known existed.

Customize Your Creation

There are countless engagement ring trends that come and go, but here at Cecil’s, if you can’t find the perfect, one-of-a-kind ring for your once-in-a-lifetime love, we’ll create it! Our team of experienced jewelers can help bring your vision to life by creating a custom piece that is beautiful and exclusive to you.

Long-Term Relationships

Diamonds may be one of nature’s toughest materials, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t need a little TLC! Unlike online counterparts, our trusted jewelers at Cecil’s Fine Jewelry maintain a relationship with you long after you pop the question. That way, from sizing to appraisal to repair, we’re your jewelry team for life.

Shopping for an engagement ring should be an experience you’ll remember forever. After all, she’ll be wearing this ring forever! Visit us today to pick your special sparkler, and we’ll make sure your memories are preserved and maintained– as all things precious should be!

Accessorizing Your Wedding Dress

The Do’s and Don’ts of Accessorizing Your Wedding Dress | Cecil's Fine Jewelry

The flowers are ordered, the catering is scheduled and the only thing left on your special day’s “to do” list is the finishing touch– jewelry. Sure, your wedding dress will take center stage, but your accessories can be the supporting roles needed to take your wedding’s look up a notch (or nine or ten). Before you buy, consider these style tips for accessorizing your happily ever after.

Tie in your tones.

That color wheel you learned in elementary school art class? Dust it off because now’s the time you’ll need it! Similar to the way certain colors pair better together, certain metals match up better than others. For example, if your dress is pure white, gold might be too harsh of a color clash. Instead, opt for silver, platinum or pearls. If your dress leans on the ivory side of the shade though, a yellow gold will highlight the warm, cream color of your fabric. Don’t forget to consider the details on your dress either! If your gown’s embellished with silver, pick out jewelry that’s predominantly the same metal.

Consider the whole look.

When picking out your wedding-wear, remember to keep your entire day’s look in mind– from head to toe. Those dangly diamond earrings may be gorgeous, but if you’re wearing your hair down, few will get to admire them. Instead, a classic pair of stud earrings complimented with a statement necklace may be your best bridal look.

Less is More.

It’s your special day, and you want to make it unique to you– we love that! But few people can pull off the veil, tiara, statement necklace, shoulder-grazing earrings and “bride” sash combination all at once. If you want to make a statement, focus on one area to accentuate with larger jewelry pieces, then tone the other accessories down to let it shine.

Notice the neckline.

When shopping for your bridal bling, always remember your gown’s neckline. For a sweetheart or strapless dress, a bold necklace is ideal. On the other hand, if your dress has an illusion neckline or sleeves, you may choose to ditch the necklace altogether and invest in a sparkly pair of statement earrings.

Be Yourself.

Instead of layering on the trends or following people’s advice on what to wear, remember that this is your day! Whether it’s big and bold or delicate and dainty, choose jewelry that expresses your style and personality. You’ll feel relaxed and in your comfort zone– which is really the best look you could hope for!

Visit Cecil’s Fine Jewelry.

Between meetings and wedding showers, taste testings and venue hunting; there are enough details to make any bride-to-be’s head spin. So take a few off your plate! Visit Cecil’s today, and our expertly trained staff will help you select the most beautiful bridal-wear from our hand-selected pieces.
